Live Motion Capture Course | Education | HKAPA

In Spring 2024, we taught a 14-week MFA course on Motion Capture and Applications for Live Performance in the Department of Media Design and Technology at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. Through the course students were introduced to the history and background on motion capture technologies. Students also learned how to setup an Xsens motion capture system and apply motion data to avatars using Blender and Unity. Lectures were supported with choreographic seminars by Chloe Wong, and dance artist, creative technologist and educator, Clemence Debaig was invited to present an online talk with the class. Students also got to participate behind-the-scenes in the development of Lu Yang's Illusory World performance at M+ in May 2025.

Students developed an independent motion capture performance with production support from our team. A project proposal and live presentation was the final outcome of the course. Overall the course explored the creative possibilities of motion capture, dance and choreography, live AV controls, 3D avatar and environment design.
